The start of a long semester...

To catch ya'll up on what's been going on in my life:

I started classes this week and let me tell you- it's mighty difficult to learn about Freud in Spanish. In addition to barely understanding my professors, I don't know where the hell anything is. Picture your first day of high school (cause it's scarier than college) and then think if it were in a country you barely knew in a language you hardly know. A good example of the many things that can go wrong is my bus trip to my first class ever. I left at 6:45 in the AM and it was raining. I told the bus driver that I wanted to go to la UCA (Universidad Catolica) and could he please let me know when to get off. Bueno, no problem. So we're driving along for a while and I ask again:
"Are we going to la UCA?"
Driver: "La UCA? I thought you said la BOCA (a part of town farther south than UCA) ."
This is the moment where I wanted to cry and strangle the guy in the same moment. I eventually found my way to class and was on time, but that is only one example of the stresses I had earlier this week. In addition to all my classes I have a TON o' reading to do... in Spanish. But I knew this was coming right?

Moving along to happier subjects, I celebrated St. Patty's day Argentina style this Friday. It's actually fairly popular here although it's only been celebrated for the past 5 years. Me and the girls went to drink liter bottles of beer and bar-hop. It was fun and some of the girls decided to end the night by going to an apartment with some guys we met. I decided to go home. I've been to strange boys' house in a foreign country and survived it. I'm not trying to press my luck. See everyone- I'm Miss. Safety over here.

So plans for this week: lots and lots of reading, Salsa lessons, Club 69 to see the drag queens, and whatever else I come up with.

That's all for now folks. Besos!

Last weekend before classes

Ok I know it's been a while, but here it goes...

I just got back from the beach this weekend. It's called Pinamar and is a five hour bus ride from BsAs. I know that sounds pretty long, but it's not too bad when you're traveling with friends. The buses here also kick Greyhound's ass- the seats are spacious and there's even a dispenser for juice and coffee. Needless to say a much more enjoyable ride than my trips home from NYC. The first day at the beach was cloudy and cold so what did we do? Shop of course! Well my friends shopped and I just bought some earrings for 4 Argentine dollars. Shopping was followed by purchases of cheap wine to play Kings with back at the hostel (it was a very amusing game). We then went to dinner (myself a little buzzed) and ate till we were stuffed. Sunday was beautiful and I got some quality beach time in. We unfortunately had to leave mid-day because some of the girls have classes Monday morning (but I don't have them till Tuesday-ha).

Classes are another story and I don't want to think about them, so let's back-track to Thursday night. Thursday nights are hip-hop night at Lost so I of course had to check that out. After having drinks at a close-by bar, friends and I took a taxi to Lost to find a VERY long line down the block. Thankfully we found other kids from our program already in line and cut it like the douche bags we are (but I ain't waitin' in no line for an hour). Once inside I was in love. This place is huge and packed with Argentines and Americans alike. I try to like the music they play regularly here, but when I hear hip-hop it's done. Nothing compares when you wanna dance... I promptly made my way to the nearest platform so I could dance atop it with my friend, Karla. I can't help that I have an unusually attraction to dancing on top of inanimate objects. Once that lost its appeal we made our way into the pit of people and danced till I was wet from sweat (pretty picture, I know). The festivities lasted till 4:30 when they stopped playing hip-hop and we realized they weren't going to play any more- sigh. I am def going to be a regular at this place. What can I say? You can take the American out of America, but you can't take America out of the American.
